Value Added Tax or VAT is applied to most purchased goods and services. In the UK, the standard rate of VAT is currently 20%, this will be the figure you use when calculating VAT usually. There are some exceptions to this however, some goods and services which have a reduced rate of 5% such as car seats for children and home energy. Some of the other goods and services have a ‘zero rate’ such as books, most foods and children’s clothes, and other items that are completely exempt such as postage stamps and financial transactions. The VAT rate for the UK currently stands at 20%, this was changed from 17.5% on the 4th of January 2011.  The standard rate of VAT was temporarily reduced to 15% on 1 December 2008, which was later put back to 17.5% on the 20th of January 2010.
